HKHS Team Moves On to Regional Cupcake Competition

(April 5, 2019) — Members of the five Haddam Killingworth High School Foods I and Advanced Foods classes have been participating in a regional cupcake competition since 2013. The Morgan Foods teacher, Joann Nunan, who has since retired, and HKHS teacher Joanna Siciliano started it. In each of the Foods class, the students are divided into groups of two or three. The students compete against the other students in their own class. Whoever wins the class competition competes against the other classes’ winners.

Whoever wins school competition will move forward to the Regionals, which will be held at The Morgan School on April 26, 2019. Valley and Colchester will also compete in the Regional Competition. There are usually four to five schools at the regional competition. The winner of the regional competition takes home a cupcake trophy that is kept at the winning school until the following year’s competition. The students who win get their names on the trophy’s nameplate that will stay forever on the trophy.

The students must make everything from scratch. They can have one cupcake recipe, and one frosting recipe, but they can decorate the cupcakes however they want, according to Ms. Siciliano. The students present their cupcakes in front of a panel of judges. The students must win in three categories: best looking, best tasting, and best verbal presentation.

The HKHS group moving forward to the Regional Competition this year is Lexi Lloyd, Erin Lepard, and Jenna Griffith. Congratulations and good luck!
