LIFEGUARD TRAINING

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Lifeguard Training this winter! The pre-course will be held on February 11, 2019 from 3:30 – 4:15 p.m. Training meets on Mondays February 25 – April 1 (6:45 – 9:00 p.m.) and Saturday March 9 (9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) at HKHS Rm. C-101/Pool. The fee is $215. Non-residents can register for an additional $10.

Become a certified Lifeguard! Students will also become certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, & Standard First Aid. Fee includes book, pocket mask, & certifications. Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously of crawl & breast strokes; swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 lb. object from a depth of 7 feet, & swim back with object.

SWIM LESSONS (Children and Adult)

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Swim lessons this winter for children and adults. Classes are conducted at the HK High School Pool. Lessons meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Session 2 & Session 3 are from February 26 – March 21, 2019 Children’s Swim Lessons (ages 4 and up) are from 6:00 – 6:40 p.m. or 6:50 – 7:30 p.m. and Adult Semi-Private Swim Lessons are from 7:50 – 8:30 p.m. The fee is $74/ $58 with pool membership / and $84 for non-residents each session.  $5 Sibling discount.

NATURE CLASS EXPERIENCE

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a new program this winter. Nature Class Experience will take your children through fun educational experiences. February 6 will feature Squirrels. March 13 will feature a Spring Rains.  The presentation is hands-on, interactive, educational and entertaining.  The program is for boys and girls ages 1-4 years old and meets from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the HK Central Office A-117.  The fee is $22 each / $17 2nd child and HK Cubs (non-residents add $5).

YOUNG CHEFS of HK

The HK Recreation Department is offering some fun cooking classes this winter. Young Chefs is for boys and girls in grades 1 – 5.  It meets from 4:15 – 5:45 p.m. at the HKHS B-112. The fee is $26 each class (non-residents add $10).  It is a unique culinary experience which will offer cooking classes to children in a safe environment that will encourage discovery and creativity. Each visit will be a new experience with fresh monthly themes and exciting new programs. Students sharpen their skills by employing the mantra, “Mise en Place” which, in the cooking world, translates into “Everything in its place.” Young chefs will learn basics in kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking and baking techniques, presentation, and so much more! At the end of each workshop the young chef will leave with a packet of info on how to recreate what we made in class and tasty treats for their family to try.

Workshops include:

  • February 6, 2019:  Make chocolate covered apples!
  • March 6, 2019:  Make Shamrock pretzels!
  • April 3,2019:  Homemade Ravioli & English Muffin Pizza!
  • May 2, 2019:  Make homemade Pizza!/
  • June 6, 2019:  Baked chicken nuggets yummy fruit smoothies.

ENGINEERING WORKSHOPS

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department welcomes Engineering Imagination. These programs are a mix of Engineering and hands-on activities for students in grades K – 4. The fee is $22 each session ($18 if you sign up for 2 or more) (non-residents add $10).  The topics include:

  • Motorized Bridges- Moving bridges are fascinating to observe! Young engineers in this program will be even more fascinated by building functioning models! Students will learn about and build model swing-bridges and drawbridges in this fun & educational S.T.E.A.M. activity. This workshop will be held on Friday, February 8 at Burr Elementary School, Wednesday, February 20 at Haddam Elementary School  and Tuesday, February 26 at Killingworth Elementary School. Sessions will be held from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.
  • Theme Park Engineering – Spinning swings, carousels, roller coasters, excitement and fun are all things we think about at theme parks – but what about the engineering?! Many people don’t give it a second thought, but in this exciting class students will learn about, design and build a LEGO® theme park, complete with motorized rides! This workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 26 at Killingworth Elementary School, Friday, March 29 at Burr Elementary School and Wednesday, April 3 at Haddam Elementary School. Sessions will be held from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.
  • Rocket Cars – Students will design, build, and race model “Rocket Cars!” This workshop will explore the unique history of using jet engines to engineer extremely fast land-based cars. Students are sure to have fun while challenging themselves to make their vehicles more aerodynamic, efficient, and faster! Students will also take home the “Rocket Cars” that they engineered in class! This workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 7 at Killingworth Elementary School, Wednesday, May 8 at Haddam Elementary School and Friday, May 10 at Burr Elementary School.  Sessions will be held from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.

SKYHAWKS BASKETBALL (Gr. K-1)

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering an Introductory Basketball for kids in Gr. K and 1 this winter. Skyhawks basketball breaks down this exhilarating sport into fundamental skills that all athletes, no matter their skill level, need to succeed. Coaches will lead the athletes through fun games and exercises, focusing on ball handling, passing, shooting and defense. There is no pressure — just lots of fun while these young athletes participate through unique Skyhawks games. Our coaching staff is trained to meet the specific needs of young children and is committed to helping them start off on the right foot as they venture into athletics. Session 3 will be on Thursday, February 28 – March 28 from 3:45 – 4:45 p.m. (Gr. 1) and from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. (K) at Burr Elementary School. The fee is $70 (non-residents add $10).

INTRO to STEM LEGOTM

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Intro to Stem LEGOTM for students in grades K – 4. The class will be offered on Mondays, February 25 – April 22, 2019 (No 3/4, 4/15) at Burr Elementary School Library from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. The fee is $145 (non-residents add $10).

Gear up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as: houseboats, mini-golf courses, forklifts, and the London Tower Bridge. Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. There are no prerequisites for this course. New challenges will be available for repeat LEGO Engineers!

WIZARD’S SCHOOL OF MAGIC

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a Magic Workshops for boys and girls ages 5 – 12 on Friday, February 15, 2019 at Haddam Elementary School Library, Friday, March 15, 2019 at Burr Elementary School Library, and Friday, April 5, 2019 at Killingworth Elementary School from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. The fee is $22 each. Non-Residents please add $5. Children will have fun learning basic introductory magic while building self-confidence and dexterity. Five different tricks will be taught in each session. Each child will receive a magic kit which includes 5 tricks, an instruction sheet describing each trick, and a magic wand. Kids will also be entertained by Tom O’Brien’s own act. Tom is a master at his craft and is a wonderful and entertaining teacher as well.  New tricks this session!

INDOOR SOCCER

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Indoor Soccer for boys and girls in grades K – 2. The program is being held on Mondays at Killingworth Elementary School Gym from  February 25 – April 8, 2019. The program is held from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. The fee is $75. Non-residents may register for an additional $10.  Young athletes will learn the basic fundamentals of soccer with some fun drills, skills, and small-sided game. Please wear sneakers and shinguards. Conducted by the UK International Soccer Camps.

HORSEBACK RIDING

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Horseback Riding Lessons this Winter for ages 6 – 18.  Classes run for 4 weeks.  The fee is $165 each session (non-residents add $10).   Session 1 lessons will meet on Tuesdays, February 26  – March 19, 2019, Session 2 lessons will meet on Wednesdays, February 27 – March 20, 2019 both session 1 & 2 will be at Greyledge Farm in Durham and will meet from 5:45 -6:45 p.m. (ages 6-12) or 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. (ages 13-18).  Session 3 lessons will meet on Tuesdays,  April 30  – May 21 and Session 4 lessons will meet on Wednesdays, May 1 – May 22. Both session 3 & 4 will be held at Sycamore Farm, 118 Christian Hill Road, Higganum and will meet from 5:45 -6:45 p.m. (ages 6-12) or 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. (ages 13-18). There is a max of 4 participants per time slot.

This beginner horseback riding class will cover grooming, saddling, riding, safety skills, as well as fun games. Lessons are geared for the novice rider. All equipment will be provided including Western and English saddle and Helmet. More advanced students are welcome. Facility is lighted. Participants should wear pants. A heeled shoe (boots) is preferred.

CRPA HOTSHOT BASKETBALL SHOOTING CONTEST

This state-wide event challenges a player’s speed, shooting, dribbling, and rebounding ability. Each player will have one minute to shoot from “hotspots” placed on the court. The top scorer in each division will move on to the county level of the competition. Sponsored by the CT Recreation and Parks Association. For children ages 9 – 15 (Residents only), Tuesday February 19, 2:30 – 4:00 pm at the HK High School Fieldhouse. The fee is $5 (pre-registered) / $10 at the door.

AQUA AEROBICS

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Aqua Aerobics at the HK High School Pool. Aqua Aerobics is a great cardio-vascular workout for all ages, all fitness levels, swimmers & non-swimmers. No equipment is required. This free-style class includes a variety of styles including kickboxing, water walking, strength training, & more. Noodles, kickboards, and hand bouys are used for a total body workout.

Session I will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from February 11 – March 25 (No 2/18). There will be a second session from April 8 – May 22 (No 4/15, 4/17).  The fee is $72/$60 with a new pool membership and Sr. Citizens each session.  Register once a week for $42/$36.  Drop-in for $10 each class.
