2022 Trail Crew Meet & Greet, Thursday, May 12, 2022, 6:00 p.m.
We will be opening our 2022 trail campaign on Thursday May 12, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at the Beaver Ledges Preserve.  Come out and join us on opening night for some liquid refreshments, snacks and discussion of this year’s schedule, priorities and possibilities.
Options include:
  • Extending the trail at Beaver Ledges to the high ledges east of the pond and scouting out a path onto our new acquisition, the DeForest Preserve.
  • Rerouting the trail at Swan Hill to improve the approach and remove conflicts with adjacent land owners.
  • Scouting out a new trail from the Planeta Preserve to the Cedar Hill Preserve accessing the views of the Connecticut River.

Parking is located along Ruth Hill Road 1/4 mile south of the Route 82 overpass.

Using Wood as a Heat Source, Sunday, May 15, 2022, 2:00 p.m.

Tom Worthley, Forest Stewardship Associate Extension Coordinator, UConn Cooperative Extension, will give a talk on the basics of using wood as a supplemental heat source.  The talk will cover harvesting, types of wood and their heat value, handling and storage, necessary equipment and safety.

The program will be held at the old dog pound off Dublin Hill Road.  From Saybrook Road, take Depot Road past the town garage and turn left onto Dublin Hill Road.  Turn left at the dirt lane just before the white picket fence.  That lane leads to the dog pound building.

Connecticut Trails Day 2022, Saturday June 4, 2022, 10:00 a.m.

Beaver Ledges

Join us for a hike at the Beaver Ledges Preserve and the newly acquired DeForest Preserve.  We will walk approximately 2 miles on moderate terrain, with some hilly and rocky spots. You may want to bring along a walking stick, if you have one.

Traveling south on Saybrook Road, pass the Route 82 highway ramp, then turn right onto Dudley Clark Road.  Turn right on Old Chester Road.  Old Chester Road turns into Ruth Hill Road. Park beyond the Route 82 overpass (about 1.5 miles), on the one-lane dirt road.
