Girls Soccer 2021: HKHS Defeats North Branford 5-0

Submitted by Mike Shea.

The Haddam Killingworth High School Varsity Girls Soccer team defeated North Branford on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021 with a final score of 5-0.

After losing a non-conference game against Avon this past weekend, the HKHS girls regrouped and controlled their game against conference rival North Branford.  With Rhianna Phipps in goal, HK was looking to rebound and strike quickly.  Leah Chester wasted no time when she received a cross from outside midfielder Brianna Nugent in the first minute of the game.  Julia Favalora quickly followed that goal, when Yumi Imai assisted her for the second goal of the game three minutes into the half.  Midfield play was controlled by Emmy Kehlenbach, Laina Goodison and Amanda Cassidy.  Captain Yumi Imai scored the third goal for the Cougars.  Brianna Nugent closed the half with a goal.

With HKHS leading 4-0 at the half, they concentrated on maintaining possession in the second half.   As pressure built up for the Cougars, Brianna Nugent made another cross and Julia Favalora connected with a header, for her second goal of the game.  HKHS defeated conference rival North Branford by a score of 5-0.  This was the second shutout for goalkeeper Rhianna Phipps. Brianna Nugent, one of three goalkeepers for HK, had a great game as a field player today.  She walked away with a goal and two assists.
