Cross Country 2019: HKHS Boys Wins Big at Ocean State Invitational

On Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, the Haddam Killingworth High School Boys and Girls Cross Country teams traveled to Goddard State Park in Rhode Island to compete at the Ocean State Invitational. The teams completed against over 90 schools from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and a team from Alabama.

The Boys team swept the Freshman, JV, and Varsity races as they took first in all three of those races on the afternoon.The Varsity boys were led by junior Matt Jennings who placed 3rd in a time of 16:28.  He was followed across the line by senior tri-captain Christian Uzwiak who placed 16th in a time of 17:11, then juniors Sean Rutledge 29th (17:33) and Fisher Harris 32nd (17:42) and senior tri-captain Griffin Robinson rounded out the scoring in 62nd (18:10).  In the boys JV race, the Cougars dominated up front to score a low tally of 31 points to easy outdistance the field.  First to cross the line for H-K was senior tri-captain Luke Sodergren who placed 2nd overall in the field of 239 runner with a time of 18:24.  Next was sophomore Tyler Robinson 4th (18:27), senior Owen Howes 5th (18:28), senior Michael Coleman 8th (18:42) and then sophomore Andrew Hedges 12th in a time of 18:53.  Not to be outdone, the H-K boys freshman squad also placed first in their race to pull out the victory scoring 77 points.  Leading the way was Mason Gorham who placed 5th overall in a time of 14:14 for the 2.5 mile course.  He was followed by teammates Joe Giaccone 13th (15:04), Jack Insalaco 17th (15:11), Alex Lara 27th (15:32) and Peter Lavelle 30th (15:37).

The Girls Varsity team placed 9th overall in the Division race scoring 324 points. They were led by junior Meara Bodak who placed 47th in the race in a time of 21:35 for the 3.1 mile course. She was followed by senior tri-captains Julia Callis 52nd (21:37) and Lauren D’Amico 78th (22:26) then two sophomores Ava DiMatteo 93rd (22:53) and Brianna Minervino 103rd (23:06).

The cross country teams will next be in action on Tuesday as they travel to Totoket Park in North Branford to compete at the Floyd Parness Invitational against Old Saybrook, Old Lyme, North Branford, Morgan, Valley Regional and East Haven.
