All The Write Ways: A Workshop for Self-Expression

Join published writer and instructor Briana Una McGuckin for this eight-week workshop. Each week, you’ll explore a fresh form of writing (from found poetry and lyric essays to memoir and genre fiction). After reading an example piece of a type of writing, you’ll participate in a group discussion about the defining features and strengths of the work before writing something of your own.

The Buttonwood Tree is proud to host Story City Troupe for a recurring “Moth Style” storytelling event. The audience is invited to participate to share a story of their own, by entering their name in to the hat. Their story does not need to follow the theme, although it is encouraged. One or two names will be chosen randomly out of the hat after SCT tellers are done, depending on the time.

Together with special guest Shena Verrett and more surprises in store. As a songwriter, her lyrics are at once prosaic and deeply poetic in their simple truth. Her lyrical subtext is reflective of diverse story – masters like Marvin Gaye, Phoebe Snow or Sun Ra.

Be a part of Buttonwood’s first ever open mic specifically for teen performers ages 12-18. Perform any type of artwork: you can use our piano or bring a guitar, ukulele, or other instrument to play! Cover your favorite song or perform an original!

Interrupter Jones

Interrupter Jones is a pop/rock band from the Hartford area. Tom Sommerfield and Noah Miller are both veterans of the Connecticut scene; the two musicians started Interrupter Jones to explore influences from the ‘70s and ‘80s. With strong vocals, slide guitars, and more than a few hooks, the Jones is a fount of witty original songs. The band’s first album, Live from Madison Square Basement, was released in October of 2018. Their sophomore effort, Crazy Kids and Their Rock and Roll, followed quickly in February of 2019…

An Evening Of Jazz And Classic Rock With The Modern Riffs

The Modern Riffs is a high energy jazz and classic rock band where talented high school musicians perform alongside experienced musicians.The group features two singer backed by four horns and a powerhouse rhythm section. The group is celebrating its eleventh year, and has fielded about 40 young musicians, many of whom have made performing arts their career. Dave Houston Poetry

David Houston is a longtime friend of The Buttonwood Tree. He participated in the first poetry reading in the old space on Rapollo Ave. in 1989, and has since been featured four times, the last being 6-8-98. He will read original riddles in poetic from encouraging the audience to solve them. His friends, Barry Bicmore, Sam Connor, and Ben Ross will provide live music during the introduction, break, and after. Suggested Donation $5.00
