Boys Lacrosse 2022: HKHS Defeated by Lyme-Old Lyme 7-6 in Triple Overtime

(May 19, 2022) — It was a thrilling game, taking three overtimes to decide. In the end, however, despite a masterful performance in the cage by goalie Braden Civiello, the Cougars fell in a heartbreaker to conference foe Lyme-Old Lyme 7-6. Regardless of the loss, the defending 2021 Shoreline Conference Champion Haddam Killingworth High School Boys lacrosse team should hold their heads high, having fought valiantly despite their depleted bench.

HK drew first blood when attackman Aaron McLeod punched it in from above the right crease, assisted by Cory Phipps, 1-0 HK. Middie Gunnar Howes then found Alex Phipps out front, 2-0 HK.

In the second period, after two goals by Lyme-Old Lyme knotted things at 2-2, A. Phipps got free 15 yards above the crease and fired a high-to-low burner, 3-2 HK. A. Phipps then completed the hat trick with a silky pump fake and shot on the right post, 4-2 HK. Brother C. Phipps added another moments later, 5-2 HK at the half.

Alex Phipps #6 (Junior)

Lyme-Old Lyme would not go away quietly, answering with three goals in the third period to tie things up and force the extra time, eventually winning it on a breakaway goal late in the third OT period.
